Application of polyether-modified silicone oil in polyurethane foam stabilizers
Polyether-modified silicone oil, a key additive in polyurethane foam materials, primarily functions as a stabilizer and is also known as a foam leveler. Although its dosage in formulations is relatively small, typically 0.5% to 2.0% of the polyol, its role is crucial.

In the initial stage of mixing polyether polyol and isocyanate, due to their poor miscibility, the hydrophobic groups of the polyether-modified silicone oil are miscible with the isocyanate, while the hydrophilic groups are miscible with the polyether polyol. Therefore, it can effectively promote the mixing and emulsification of the two, ensuring that the reaction starts uniformly in the system.
Polyether-modified silicone oil reduces the surface tension of the reaction system, allowing air to disperse uniformly into fine bubbles, forming bubble nuclei. This provides conditions for the gases generated by carbon dioxide and the blowing agent to enter the bubble nuclei and form bubbles, while the low surface tension is conducive to bubble growth.
At lower system viscosity, the formed bubble nucleus liquid film is thin and easily ruptured due to drainage, coalescence, or mechanical impact. Polyether-modified silicone oil enhances the stability of the bubble nuclei through the Gibbs-Marangoni effect, reducing leakage from the bubble walls and bubble coalescence. Furthermore, its nonionic properties help reduce van der Waals forces at the gas-liquid interface, further stabilizing the bubbles.
In the final formation stage of polyurethane flexible foam materials, bubble nucleus connectivity is crucial. At lower system viscosity, polyether-modified silicone oil contributes to the stability of the bubble nucleus wall film and promotes the film to reach the critical open-cell thickness, creating conditions for the final opening of the bubble nuclei.

The Role and Dosage of Polyether-Modified Silicone Oil
Polyether-modified silicone oil plays the role of a stabilizer in the one-step production of polyurethane flexible foam.
Its dosage needs to be determined by comprehensively considering factors such as the foaming process, formulation, foam size, and size of the foaming equipment. Generally, the dosage is 0.5 to 2.5 parts polyether-modified silicone oil per 100 parts of polyether polyol. Insufficient dosage may lead to small foam volume, high density, large bubble diameter, cracks and voids inside and on the surface of the foam, and even foam collapse. Excessive addition is not only uneconomical but may also reduce foam performance.
